West Ham On The Ropes After Tévez Ruling
Sheffield United continue to have joy in their case against West Ham as the Carlos Tévez affair moves closer to its conclusion...
The latest High Court battle between Sheffield United and West Ham United has gone the way of the Blades.
The Championship side are seeking £30 million from the Hammers to compensate for money lost when they were relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the 2006-07 season.
West Ham breached Premier League rules when they signed Tévez and fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano from Corinthians. They were fined £5.5 million, but were not docked points.
Tevez popped up to score the Irons' winner against Manchester United - his employers now, of course - on the last day of the season. The east London side thus avoided relegation at the expense of the Blades.
West Ham chiefs initially called the Yorkshire club "desperate" for trying to sue them, but it's the capital club who are in dire straits now.
Mr Justice Teare has granted a temporary order which will prevent West Ham from appealing while Sheffield United press on in pursuit of the money.
The case will return to the High Court for a full trial next year and it appears likely that West Ham will pay the massive 'damages'.
