Serie A Preview: Bologna – Fiorentina
Relegation-battlers Bologna are hosting Champions League chasing Fiorentina at the Renato Dall’Ara stadium, in a match that is vital for each side for completely differing reasons.
Bologna Slowly Gaining Momentum
Bologna have become more compact and impressive since the arrival of Sinisa Mihajlovic on the bench. Besides a 4-1 loss to Milan last weekend they have not lost in Serie A under the Serbian coach. Mihajlovic has guided his side well and they continue to pick up points and gain momentum in their fight to avoid the drop.
In their midweek match the Felsinei moved five points clear of the Serie A drop zone with a late 1-0 victory at Atalanta. Sergio Volpi’s long-range free-kick 10 minutes from time was the difference between the teams, as no one picked up the lose ball, which bounced into the goal to hand the visitors all three points in Bergamo.
Fiorentina Aiming For A Top Four Finish
Fiorentina were one of the teams that were touted as outsiders to fight for the Scudetto and, although they have fallen off the pace in terms of the championship top spot, their aim of reaching the top four Champions League spots is very much achievable.
The Viola registered a win in their midweek
match and leapfrogged Napoli into sixth spot
with a 2-1 triumph against the Partenopei.
The hosts took the lead two minutes into the second half through Mario Santana only for Luigi Vitale to level matters a couple of minutes later. Riccardo Montolivo put the Viola ahead for a second time with 11 minutes remaining and this time it proved decisive.

TEAM NEWS
Bologna
Strikers Davide Marchini and Gabriele Paonessa are sidelined, while Massimo Mutarelli is also unavailable for this weekend, but none of the Bologna squad players are suspended.
Possible Formation (4-4-2): Antonioli, Zenoni, Terzi, Moras, Bombardini, Mudingayi, Volpi, Amoroso, Valiani, Osvaldo, Di Vaio
Fiorentina
Exciting news for Viola fans is the fact that Adrian Mutu may be on the bench for this encounter after recovering from his injury. Martin Jorgensen and Zdravko Kuzmanovic are unavailable through injury, while Marco Storari and Luciano Zauri are suspended.
Possible Formation (4-3-1-2): Frey, Comotto, Dainelli, Gamberini, Vargas, Montolivo, Melo, Donadel, Santana, Jovetic, Gilardino.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Fiorentina
Alberto Gilardino has been reborn in Florence with his new team. The former Milan hit man was bought in the summer and has since paid back the faith shown in him by the Viola. A deadly marksman up front, his ability to finish anything handed to him in the box had served the Viola well. His aerial ability is incomparable. 'Gila' has found the back of the net on 12 occasions this season in Serie A and he will need to be well contained by the Bologna back line.
Bologna
Marco Di Vaio has been incredible this season, scoring on demand, and easily adapting to life at the newly promoted side. His ability to score goals with both feet and in the air makes him an excellent target for his team-mates to aim for. Di Vaio’s goals have been invaluable, and he is currently top scorer in Serie A with 15 strikes. His fine form in front of goal has been the catalyst for rumours that he may be considered for the Italian national team again. This has excited the former Juve striker, who made 14 appearances for the Azzurri and scored two goals.
PREDICTION
Both of these teams come into this match from wins in midweek, and they will feel confident that a good result is within reach. Bologna are at home, but Fiorentina have a better side on paper. Expect this game to be tight. The Viola have what it takes to edge it on the day.
