Rubinho Blunder Gifts Lazio Point

Diego Milito scored, missed a penalty, and had a goal dubiously disallowed, as Genoa had to settle for a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico, with Ousmane Dabo earning Lazio a point following a goalkeeping blunder by Rubinho.

One of Serie A's revelations this season, Lazio, came into this game in high spirits, despite their unfortunate 1-0 derby defeat to Roma last weekend. They had selection problems though, as FabioFirmani, Matuzalem, and Sebastiano Siviglia were injured, while Stefan Radu and Cristian Ledesma were suspended. Pasquale Foggia formed a trident attack with Goran Pandev and Mauro Zarate.

Genoa were also in confident mood, despite an equally harsh scoreline of 1-4 against Juventus last time out. The Rossoblu were minus the services of Matteo Paro, Omar Milanetto, and Francesco Modesto. Serie A's top scorer Diego Milito once again led the line in another three pronged attack with Raffaele Palladino and Giuseppe Sculli.

First Half

Lazio started the game on the front-foot, and Foggia's wayward cross grazed the crossbar, while Aleksandar Kolarov's rocket of a free kick was deflected into the arms of Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho.

Foggia was lively in the opening 20 minutes, and he released Stephan Lichtsteiner with a delightful through pass, but the Swiss full back was wasteful with his attempted cut-back.

It took until midway through the half for Genoa to register their first attempt of the game. Unsurprisingly it came from the boot of Milito, who saw his 25 yard shot deflected up in the air for Juan Pablo Carrizo. Milito then embarked on a mazy solo run but, just as he was winding up to shoot, he was thwarted by a perfectly timed Emilson Cribari challenge.

On the half hour mark the game burst into life as Mourad Meghni was not far away from scoring a simply sensational individual goal. The Frenchman cut out a loose pass in the centre circle, before waltzing past three men and firing a couple of yards wide from outside the area.

Genoa were threatening a bit more now. First Sculli fired off target, before Milito forced Carrizo into a low save with a first time snap-shot.

On 37 minutes, Kolarov once again underlined his prowess from dead-balls with a thunderous 30-yard free kick that was beaten away by Rubinho. Pandev could only direct the rebound straight at the Brazilian custodian.

A couple of minutes later Genoa had the ball in the back of the net through Milito, but it was dubiously disallowed for offside. Anthony Vanden Borre was released down the right, and he crossed for Milito to tap in from six yards. The linesman raised his flag, but replays showed that both the creator and finisher were onside by the proverbial mile. It was a simply shocking decision by the officials.

Genoa players and staff were absolutely furious, and surrounded the linesman in question as the teams left the field at half time.

Second Half

Lazio made one change at the break, introducing Tommaso Rocchi for the disappointing Pandev. This sparked Zarate into life, as he turned smartly outside the box before flashing a shot over the bar.

Foggia tested Rubinho with a left foot curler while, down the other end, Thiago Motta tried his luck with a long range free kick, but he made a bad connection.

On 52 minutes, Genoa were handed a glorious chance to take the lead when Sculli went down in the box under pressure from Lichtsteiner. Milito stepped up, but he incredibly blazed the ball over the bar. It was an uncharacteristic miss by The Prince.

Foggia tried to make Milito pay for his miss with a stinging shot that was clawed out of the near post by Rubinho, who minutes later also saved from Rocchi. Lazio were coming on strong now, and they had penalty appeals for a Vanden Borre handball turned away.

Milito was still dangerous for Genoa, and just past the hour mark he fired inches wide after some more inspired play. The Argentine showed his classy side by telling the referee to overturn his decision and award a goal kick, instead of a corner.

Zarate was much more lively this second half, and he cut inside from the left before shooting wide. The 21-year-old then did brilliantly to thread Brocchi through. The ball eventually made its way through to Rocchi just yards out, but with the goal gaping he scuffed his finish, allowing Sokratis to throw his body in the way.

On 69 minutes the deadlock was finally broken, but it was Genoa who grabbed the goal. Carrizo flapped on a cross, and Vanden Borre found Milito, who this time made no mistake with a clinical volley into the far corner.

Lazio threw on another attacker in the form of Simone Inzaghi but it was Genoa who continued to come forward, and Palladino and Milito both tried their luck.

On 78 minutes Genoa had a great chance to kill off the game. Milito left his man for dead and forced a fine save out of Carrizo. The ball rebounded to Palladino, who had an open goal, but he inexplicably tried to take an extra touch and he fluffed his lines.

Sixty seconds later Palladino was made to pay, as Lazio got back on level terms. It was a goalkeeping catastrophe for Rubinho, who spilled a harmless Ousmane Dabo long-shot into his own net.

There were few chances for the remainder of the game, although Zarate did curl a free kick agonizingly wide in injury time, as both teams settled for a share of the spoils.
