Crowd Troubles Tarnish Roman Derby
Violence took place inside and outside Rome’s Stadio Olimpico earlier tonight, as Roma and Lazio squared off in the Derby della Capitale.
Following the events that took place in Rome tonight, the cities bid to host this season’s Champions League final may be pout into further doubt, due to crowd violence, arrests and charges that took place before, during and after the contest.
According to reports, a group of around 200 supporters engaged in a large brawl at around 1900 CET, in Largo de Bosisio. The group were met by a large number of police, who did their best to bring the brawl to a halt.
Tear gas was utilized by the officers, however it seemed not to work, as 15 policemen were injured in the brawl.
The trouble continued inside the Olympic stadium, as eight Lazio fans were arrested for launching objects at police, who were trying to break up various scuffles amongst the fans.
It’s another blow to the image of Italian football, as violence continues to be a persistent issue throughout the peninsula.
