Atalanta fans have angrily protested against the possible signing of the club’s former striker Christian Vieri.
With the forward’s career on a downer in 2006 following a host of injuries that forced him to miss that summer’s World Cup, Atalanta offered him the chance to resurrect his career. Vieri made just seven appearances that season before immediately leaving the club to join Fiorentina.
This left a bitter taste in the mouth of many supporters in Bergamo, who feel that Vieri betrayed them after they gave him the opportunity to find his form and fitness again.
Vieri is a free agent once again after one season with the Viola, and he has been heavily linked with a shock move back to Atalanta.
This possibility has been confirmed by the club’s sporting director Carlo Orsi, who said: “We must not exclude the idea of his return.”
Atalanta fans have angrily protested against the possible return of Vieri, making it perfectly clear that he is not welcome in Bergamo.
“Vieri you are just an ingrate and you aren’t worthy of Atalanta – La Dea deserve respect,” was the message written on a wall near the club’s Atleti Azzurri d’Italia stadium.
