Salgado: Real Madrid should go for Walker, not Maicon

The Brazil international has been strongly linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, but the former Spain right-back believes the Tottenham youngster is the better option

Michel Salgado thinks Tottenham’s Kyle Walker would be the perfect right-back signing for his former club Real Madrid, claiming he is more complete than Inter’s Maicon.

The Brazilian right-back is expected to leave the Serie A club this summer and has been strongly linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu several times in the last few years, but Salgado is not convinced by him.

Instead of Maicon, the 36-year-old feels the option Real should really be looking into is Spurs’ Walker, with the former Spain international impressed by the Englishman’s talent going forward, adding that he is also better than the Inter man in defence.

"He [Walker] moves up the field like a bullet," Salgado was quoted as saying on Marca. "He is really quick and he does a lot of damage in attack, while he is better at the back. For me, he is the best, but his price could make a transfer impossible.

"Brazilian full-backs are all the same. Spectacular while moving up the field, but they create problems to any team in defence. It is impossible to create damage in attack and defend at the same time. You have to see what Mourinho wants."

Salgado also thinks Real already have a potential first-choice right-back in their roster, with 20-year-old Dani Carvajal someone he believes could be a cheaper, but effective alternative to big-name players.

“I have Real Madrid TV here in England and I have seen him [Carvajal] play several times. He seems to be a wonderful alternative," he enthused.

"You either sign Maicon or [Philipp] Lahm, experienced players, or you bet on a youngster. And there you have Carvajal, who could be Real Madrid's starting full-back in two years."

Salgado also briefly spoke about his future following his departure from Blackburn Rovers, and he seems fairly set on staying in the game for at least another year.

“I want to play another season, I need that adrenaline.”
