The Manchester United ace is the bookies favourite to scoop the prestigious award following his wonder season at Old Trafford last year, where he helped his side lift the Premier League and Champions League trophies.
Messi is also in the running but it is highly unlikely that he will win the prize, a second place finish seems on the cards for the Barcelona man.
Nevertheless, Frey believes the Azulgrana man should win.
France Football asked the Viola 'Keeper who deserves the golden ball and he said:
"Messi is sensational and he belongs in another category. When I played against Barcelona he impressed me so much. Seeing him play is a pleasure."
The French goalkeeper has been outstanding for Fiorentina this season pulling off all the right moves in front of goal but his Messi prediction may be wrong as the result will be announced on Tuesday.
