When the news broke earlier this month that Manchester City had singled out Kaka among four world-class transfer targets, few would have thought anything would come of it.
And yet now, two weeks into the January transfer window, the Sky Blues have drawn AC Milan to the negotiating table to discuss the potential sale of their most coveted player.
And what's more, reports emanating from England suggest that the Rossoneri have accepted City's astronomical €110 million offer for the Brazilian playmaker.
It's all on Kaka's shoulders now and recent comments attributed to his spokesperson, Diogo Kotscho, seem to suggest that there is a possibility - however slim - that the deal could go through.
While the Citizens are throwing ludicrous sums of money at the 26-year-old to convince him to make the switch, he maintains that the prospect of wages approaching €300,000 per week doesn't interest him.
But The Daily Mail reports that Kaka has been persuaded to meet with Sheikh Mansour to discuss Abu Dhabi United Group's long-term aims for the Eastlands outfit.
The Selecao superstar will only leave San Siro if he is convinced that ADUG will succeed in helping City to become the biggest club in the world - and that means Champions League qualification and domestic success, soon.
Right now, the Premier League side are sitting just two points clear of the relegation zone, even with Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Elano and an in-form Stephen Ireland at their disposal.
So it will take something special to lure Kaka away from Milan, in addition to the reported get-out clauses he would have written into his contract should he decide to make the switch.
