Lazio’s recent summer signing Mauro Zarate has had a brilliant start to life in the Italian topflight, as he has managed eight goals to date, most of which came in the opening ten rounds of the season.

As a result of his great form, many clubs have been tracking his every movement, including Real Madrid, who have now dropped their interest following the capture of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Ajax Amsterdam.

Despite the Spanish side’s lack of interest at this point in time, and despite the fact that the player himself has declared his content in Rome with Lazio, Manchester City have reportedly made an offer for the player in the past few hours.

A Lazio official by the name of Jose Alberti has spoken about the ambitious Eastlands club's attempt to nab Zarate.

“The only way Lazio would part with Mauro at the moment is through a loan, but even that is highly unlikely,” Alberti told Novantesimo.it.

“It is true that Manchester City have contacted the club, and are interested in signing our striker this month.

“The Arab who owns the property is very interested actually, as he knows of Zarate from his time at Al-Sadd,” he added.

“A month ago they spoke to the club, and they told me that their interests from Serie A were [Gianluigi] Buffon, [David] Trezeguet and Mauro Zarate.

“They are prepared to offer us €30 million, and in my opinion, they are hoping to reach the levels of Real Madrid in the golden age,” he concluded.

Manchester City are yet to make comment on their supposed interest in Zarate, however it is highly unlikely that the claims made by the Lazio official are false, as the cashed-up Citizens seem interested in anything that moves at present.
