The 50-year-old had come under intense pressure at the Vicente Calderon in the past few weeks, as Atleti have failed to collect a single victory since the turn of the year.
It was speculated that last weekend's defeat to Real Valladolid would be the last straw, and that seems to have been the case as Aguirre has decided to exit on his own terms.
“We have reached a good agreement,” he told Cadena Ser. “I am the first to understand that I am a fundamental part of the problem the team finds itself in.
“We are adults, it doesn’t matter. It’s the easiest for everyone and the least traumatic.”
Abel Resino, the current Castellon coach, is expected to succeed Aguirre in the Atleti hot-seat.
