Atlético Madrid’s attempt to lure Fluminense attacking midfielder, Thiago Neves appears to have reached a dead end after both clubs failed to agree on a transfer fee.

But Atleti’s sporting director, Jesús García Pitarch is still holding out hope that they can land the 23 year old before the transfer market closes on the 1st of September. However, he is also aware of the competition provided by Hamburg SV, who is also chasing the Olympic bronze medallist, as well as the player’s current owner’s refusal to budge on the €12 million offer.

“During this last week, we have made an offer for Neves, but the offer has not been accepted,” he told Marca.

“I do not know if an agreement will be reached or not regarding this situation but if it does not work out, then I believe there will be no more new signings

“I’m also not sure if he has already signed for Hamburg. I have spoken with his agent but because the player is also owned by an investor, often you do not know what is going on,” added Pitarch.

Atlético have recently completed the loan deal for Argentine Éver Banega, while Portuguese midfielder Maniche seems to be slowly returning to favour at the club and Pitarch will happily rely on the pair if the Neves deal falls through.
