British tabloid the Sun reports that Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is looking to land the Newcastle United captain in the January transfer window, and is willing to pay whatever it takes in order to get his man.

Villans boss O'Neill wants the goal-scoring burden to be evened out, as it currently falls on the shoulders of pacey forward Gabriel Agbonlahor and Norwegian international John Carew.

O'Neill spent in excess of £30 million over the summer to bolster his squad, but the Sun claim that owner Randy Lerner is again willing to back him in the transfer market.

Michael Owen is in the final year of his contract, and has already been linked with a £5 million switch to London club Chelsea. Should he fail to renew terms at St James' Park, he would be available on a free transfer next summer.
