Tottenham Tracking Sebastian Przyrowski

Despite Harry Redknapp's words of encouragement for Heurelho Gomes, it appears the wily Spurs manager has his eyes on some competition for the Brazilian keeper.

Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Polish goalkeeper Sebastian Przyrowski as Harry Redknapp looks to improve his "naive" defence.

The problems that Spurs' Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes (pictured) has endured since moving from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the summer are well-documented, as the keeper has struggled to impose himself on the more physical, speedier surroundings of the Premier League.

Now, according to British broadsheet The Daily Telegraph, Redknapp is looking at bringing in the 27 year-old Polonia Warsaw keeper, in order to provide Gomes with some stiff competition.

Although Gomes has responded well to Redknapp's previous encouragement and turned in a solid string of performances over the last month, Redknapp is keen to increase competition all over his squad.

Current second-choice keeper Cesar Sanchez, who is 38-years-old, is not seen as a long-term option by Redknapp and was replaced on the Spurs bench at the weekend by youngster Ben Alnwick.

Przyrowski, who has won five caps for Poland, is seen as a much better option. When he was 18, he had a trial with Feyenoord and in 2005 was watched by Arsenal scout Steve Rowley. He is currently enjoying a good season in Poland too, conceding just seven goals in 16 games, and has recently gone 525 minutes without conceding at all.

At 6'4", the Pole has sufficient physical presence for the English game, and could command a fee of £1 million, which in the current inflated January market does not represent a massive gamble. He was also seen in England yesterday, lending weight to the rumours that Redknapp will strike to secure his services soon.

Spurs have also been linked with Newcastle United's Shay Given and Reading's Marcus Hahnemann, though it looks now as if he will be plumping for a less high-profile option.
