The Argentinean hitman is currently on loan at Formello from Arabian club Al Sadd. Lazio president Claudio Lotito has been working overtime to ensure he keeps Zarate.
The player has been locked in talks with the Biancocelesti in order to work towards a better deal. It seems as if Lotito has done enough as a verbal agreement has been reached.
"It's all true. There is an agreement with president Lotito for the next five years, only a few details are missing," Sergio Zarate told Il Corriere Dello Sport.
"We shook hands and, for me, this is worth more than a contract. We will not change our demands. If Lotito confirms his words then Mauro will stay [with Lazio]. However, it's up to Lazio to sign him from Al Sadd."
Lotito echoed the agent's words, insisting that he is extremely close to signing Zarate for good.
"Zarate will stay with us for the future, all that is missing is his signature," added the chief.
With the gentleman's agreement in place, Lotito must now convince the Arab's to part company with their man. Reports suggest Al Sadd want €20 million for the striker.
Lazio will need to move in quickly as a number of top-European clubs are keen on the hitman. It is believed the deal could be all wrapped up by March 10.
