With qualification for Champions League football the main objective this season, Bianconcelesti chief Claudio Lotito is ready to invest some of Lazio's transfer kitty in Liverpool's Argentinean midfielder Javier Mascherano.

The Italians are keen to add some muscle in the middle and il Corriere Dello Sport claims the Liverpool man is their main target.

The 24-year-old is a superb player and he would be a welcome addition to the team.

However, before Lotito brings out the blank cheque book, he needs to ensure his coach Delio Rossi guides the team to a fourth place finish this season, as Champions League football may be the difference between a yes and a no.

Reports suggest the club have even contacted the player's agent, Walter Tamer, with a view to getting the ball rolling.

Earlier this year the same agent was quoted as saying his player could move to Italy.

Lotito is ready to move and shake but the player will not come on the cheap.

Nor is there any indication that Liverpool would even contemplate selling a key member of their side. The chances of manager Rafael Benitez agreeing to a sale seem remote.
