The forward says he declined the opportunity to play for the Euro 2004 runners-up as he was hopeful one day he would be called up by the South American giants
The powerful striker joined Porto from Tokyo Verdy in the summer of 2008 and has played an integral part in the Europa League holders' team ever since.
His efforts have earned him a place in the Brazil national team's set-up and he has been given the nod to start in Wednesday's friendly against Mexico.
Hulk has now revealed he received an offer to put on Portugal's shirt, which he rejected as he was confident he would get to play for his country's national team.
"I turned down an offer to represent Portugal," the 25-year-old told a news conference. "I always had the dream to play for Brazil, and that dream has come true already.
"There were always many questions about me, because I left the country very early. But I am under the spotlight at Porto now, I play in the Champions League and my stock is rising."
Hulk stressed he is not worried about playing in the center of Brazil's attack, although he usually plays in a different position for his club.
"At Porto, I play out wide, on the right, with two other attackers," he added. "But I can play in any position in the attack, I have even played in the middle before."
