After achieving victory in his debut game as Argentina boss, Sabella pays tribute to his new captain

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella hailed the qualities of Lionel Messi after his decisive contribution in the 1-0 win against Venezuela on Friday.

The Barcelona forward provided the all important assist for Nicolas Otamendi's goal in the 67th minute to send Argentina to victory in the friendly encounter.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the new Argentina boss claimed that Messi’s set piece ability was not far off the standard set by David Beckham.

“Beckham of course is known to take good free kicks but Messi is very capable of taking them as well and thus took most of the set-pieces,” Sabella told reporters after the match.

“Of course, Messi has other qualities as well. There are two sides to a superstar and I have always seen him conduct himself properly off the pitch, while his achievements as a player speak for themselves.”

The former Estudiantes coach also shared his thoughts on the victory, revealing that he intends to make revisions in light of a spirited performance by Venezuela.

"They [Venezuela] are improving every game and they played well on the counterattack,” said Sabella.

“I will review our performance later and look to make improvements in the needed areas. The World Cup qualifiers are the most important part and we have to prepare well for it."
