Copa Libertadores: Team Of The Week

Goal.com brings you the best XI after another pulsating week in the Copa Libertadores...

By Tim Sturtridge and Anthony Wright

Ronaldo - Corinthians x Cerro

Formation: 3-4-3

GOALKEEPER

Rodrigo Munoz (Nacional) – The goalkeeper played his part in the result of the round. With the scores still level Munoz’s acrobatic save from a long range effort from Banfield’s James Rodriguez gave his side the impetus to go and win the match.

DEFENDERS

Sebastian Coates (Nacional) - The 6'5" defender also played a major role in nullifying Banfield's attacking threat while he also made an impact in attack as he opened the scoring.

William (Corinthians) – With all the new faces which have turned up at the Pacaembu recently, all part of club president Andres Sanchez’s assault on the Copa Libertadores, it was an old hand who played a key role in their win in Paraguay. The 33-year-old centre-back William played with a calm assuredness for 90 minutes as he anchored his team on their way to narrow 1-0 victory.

Julio Irrazabal (Cerro Porteno) - Didn't deserve to be on the losing side against Corinthians. The full-back marauded down the right hand side and was a frequent threat to Timao's defence as he often had to beat Roberto Carlos to get more involved in Cerro's attacking moves.

MIDFIELDERS

Ralf (Corinthians) - The defensive midfielder put in an excellent shift for Corinthians, who were on the back foot for much of the game against Cerro Porteno. Ralf protected his back four well with some fine interceptions and defensive play to keep the Brazilians' lead intact.

Leo Lima (Sao Paulo) - Leo Lima found himself in the right place at the right time to double Sao Paulo’s advantage against Nacional just two minutes after Dagoberto had given the Brazilian outfit the lead. The journeyman midfielder who has played all over Brazil as well as in Portugal seems to have settled quickly at Sao Paulo and is proving himself to be an astute purchase by Ricardo Gomes.

Neri Cardozo (CF Monterrey) – The talented Argentine midfielder put his side in front as they hosted Once Caldas but it was not enough for the Mexican outfit to hold on to all three points. The 23-year-old has already packed a lot his burgeoning career with a bucketful of continental success while at Boca Juniors. He will need to stay on top of his game however if he is to help Monterrey break out of Group 2.

Walter Montillo (Universidad de Chile) – Another Argentine playing abroad who shone in the Copa Libertadores this week was Universidad de Chile’s number 10 Walter Montillo. The playmaker pulled the strings as the home side overcame Brazilian champions Flamengo to take top spot in Group 8.

ATTACKERS

Ronaldo (Corinthians) - He finally found the back of the net for the first time in five games, and it was enough to give Corinthians all three points against a spirited Cerro Porteno side. If 'O Fenomeno' can keep finding the net, it bodes well for Timao's chances in the competition.

Pedroy Ascoy (Juan Aurich) - With Juan Aurich leading 3-2 against unbeaten Alianza Lima, Ascoy beat half the Alianza team as he made a run into the penalty area before firing a shot into the top corner. The goal sealed the game and keeps his side's hopes of qualifying for the next stage alive.

Santiago Silva (Velez Sarsfield) – Last year’s Apertura top goalscorer once again proved his worth to Velez by netting late on against Colo-Colo. It was backs against the wall stuff for Velez as they found themselves a goal and a man down in Chile heading into second half injury-time. Velez will always have a chance however as long as they have the Uruguayan striker on the pitch and his strike ensured the team from Buenos Aires remain unbeaten in Group 7.
