South American Dispatch: Coritiba Coach Ney Franco Faces Up To Relegation While Everything Still To Play For In Chile

Goal.com’s Tim Sturtridge reports on the Coritiba coach's reaction to relegation and Chile’s previous against World Cup rivals. Staying west of the Andes the Chilean title is still up for grabs…

Ney Franco - Coritiba
Coritiba's relegation to Brazil's second tier was met with a riot at full-time at the Couto Pereira which saw many hospitalised including a policeman. Amid the fractious scenes, their head coach Ney Franco was left to face the press and explain what went wrong in the club's centenary year.

The 1-1 home draw with Fluminense combined with Botafogo’s win over Palmeiras sealed Coritiba’s relegation on the final day of the Brazilian season, and for Ney Franco it was his team’s away form that eventually got them relegated.

“The decisive factor of our season has been our poor form on the road.” Ney Franco said. “We just did not manage to score the points needed away from home, it is not the draw with Fluminense which got us relegated. I count our home and away games with each team as one result and using this system it is easy to see why we were relegated. Also our form dropped in the latter stages of the season.

At home this season Coritiba picked up 33 points with a record of 10 wins, three draws and just five defeats. On the road however it was a different story with only two wins, five draws and a punishing 12 defeats. This poor away form, combined with a downturn in home results in the final rounds of the season, sealed the club’s fate.

“At one point during the second half of the season we were six points above the relegation zone and had the chance to stretch that to nine points.” Ney Franco added. “Unfortunately at the time we lost games and got sucked towards the drop zone. We are professionals after all and we have to accept the result of losing so many games.”

Ney Franco echoed the disappointment of the fans and hoped that some good could still come out of the club’s centenary despite the heartache of relegation.

“There is a project for the future of Coritiba in place and my thinking is not caught up in relegation but what is to come.” Ney Franco said before addressing speculation that he may be set to lose his job. “There is a decision to be made at the club and I’m sure my position will be discussed. I am here as an employee of the club and of course the decisions the club make are dictated by results.”

Chile Set To Face Familiar Foes

The history books suggest that Chile are in for a hard time when Group H gets underway at next year’s World Cup in South Africa. La Roja have suffered defeats to Honduras, Spain and Switzerland in their most recent encounters with their three World Cup rivals and Marcelo Bielsa knows his team must improve on this in six months' time.

Chile have had some interesting encounters with the Hondurans down the years with a couple of high scoring matches in Santiago but their most recent encounter in the United States saw Honduras record a 2-0 victory.

Chile have never won a game against Spain and their best result came on home soil when they managed a 1-1 draw in 1981. The last time these two met was in a friendly in Spain when the hosts ran out convincing 3-0 winners in Villarreal.

Back in December 2007 Chile visited Vienna for a friendly with Switzerland which the Europeans won 2-1. Chile do however have a victory over the Swiss in the 1962 World Cup to remember as the sides prepare to meet at the same competition next year.

Meanwhile it has been decided that Chile will be based in the city of Nelspruit during their World Cup campaign. The camp is certainly handily place for their opener against Honduras which will take place in the same city.

As they tournament progresses La Roja will travel to Port Elizabeth to play Switzerland before taking on Spain in Pretoria in their final Group H game. Chile's fans are hoping their squad will then be heading back to their Nelspruit training camp and not straight back home to Santiago.

Católica Hold Slight Advantage Ahead Of Chilean Title Decider

Chile will have it’s Clausura champion by the end of tomorrow night when Universidad Católica host Colo Colo in the second leg of the title deciding play-off tie.

After a pulsating 2-2 draw in the first leg Católica hold the advantage on away goals but it is unlikely they will sit back on their home turf but rather look to put clear daylight between themselves and Colo Colo as soon as possible.

In the first leg at the weekend Miralles gave the hosts the perfect start after 10 minutes. Católica equalised through Mirosevic’s penalty kick but moments later a Zenteno own goal put Colo Colo back in front. It looked as though the hosts would carry a 2-1 advantage into the second leg but right at the death Martínez popped up with Católica’s second leveller of the game.
