The 2014 Goal 50 is a two horse race between Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben, according to Croatia legends Aljosa Asanovic and Robert Prosinecki.
The prestigious, annual list ranking the 50 greatest players of the 2013-14 season will be revealed later on Monday.
"During the club season, Ronaldo was number one," Asanovic told Goal. "But during the World Cup it was Robben who made the biggest mark amongst all the great players.
"He is very powerful one on one, has a great shot, controls the ball perfectly - he showed all that in Brazil."
Asanovic won 62 caps for Croatia and was part of the golden generation that finished third at the 1998 World Cup.
Also in that side was ex-Red Star Belgrade, Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder Robert Prosinecki, who is another big fan of Robben.
"Robben was the best at the World Cup, and apart from those two matches against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final defeat, he was Bayern’s key player in winning the league and cup double," 1991 European Cup winner Prosinecki told Goal.
"You may say he is selfish sometimes, but I appreciate egoists in football if it benefits the team."
The 2014 Goal 50 will be announced in full at 1430CET on Monday.
