Former Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes that Robert Lewandowski is certain to be a success when he joins the Bavarian club.

The Borussia Dortmund striker will make his long-awaited move to the Allianz Arena this summer after four stellar years at Signal Iduna Park and plays his final game for Jurgen Klopp's side in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday - against Bayern.

Pep Guardiola has rotated his striking options this season but the ex-England international feels the Pole is certain to start on a regular basis when he does make the move and will prove to be an excellent addition.

"He’ll start, yeah. He’s one of the best goalscorers in the world and he’s exactly what Bayern Munich need. He’s going to Bayern and he’d score goals in every league," he told Goal.

"He’s an impact player. At this level, he has always been competitive. He’s hungry and determined. A lot of people who play sport don’t have that ingredient and it’s essential.

"He’d be great in any sport. He should be competitive in the moment because that’s why he’s coming. He can say: ‘I’m going to make your team better; I’m going to beat you’.

"Don’t think about next season, just focus on this game. Do what’s best for Dortmund because they’ve been great for him as well. He should celebrate if he scores."

Hargreaves, who won the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008, believes that Dortmund will struggle without their star man next year, particularly if they suffer injuries as they have this season.

"Jurgen Klopp is a great coach and they play at such a high energy; they press and they work so hard and they’ve had a few injuries this year because they put so much energy in with Champions League football, with league football.

"Injuries were a big part of what happened to them this year. They virtually missed [Ilkay] Gundogan for the whole season. [Mats] Hummels has been out as well and [Lukasz] Piszczek.

"It’ll be difficult for them to get back to that Champions League final level but Jurgen Klopp is a great coach. No one had Lewandowski on the radar before he went to Dortmund and he’s one of the best strikers in the world now."

And Hargreaves believes that the arrival of Lewandowski this summer could force incumbent striker Mario Mandzukic to leave this summer.

"With Mandzukic, can he swallow it and stick around or will he make a move? Arsenal and Chelsea – I think he’d improve them," he added.

"Bayern Munich only play with one striker, so it’s either-or. I think there’s a good chance we’ll see him go.”

Pep Guardiola has rotated his striking options between Mandzukic and Mario Gotze this season and Hargreaves feels the duo offer different skillsets, but says the 21-year-old is not a guaranteed starter.

"Mandzukic and Gotze are completely different. I think football’s different compared to what you need in the game.

"If you look at the Real Madrid game, in which the spaces were tight and Madrid defended very tight, you couldn’t really use Mandzukic as well because he’s very good at running through the channels and running in behind, doing a lot of work for the team.

"I think in those tight spaces, with Real Madrid defending so compactly, you could utilise Gotze more because he’s good in tight areas because he’s so small. I think Gotze’s been able to come on and have an impact.

"But he’s not, by any stretch, a starter in that team because you’ve got [Franck] Ribery on the left, [Arjen] Robben on the right and the dominance in midfield.

"But when he’s come on, he’s been effective. I don’t think he’s earned the right to be a first-choice starter just yet.”
