Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen believes David Moyes should be appointed ahead of Jose Mourinho as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

On Wednesday morning, Sir Alex confirmed he will retire at the end of the season but will remain at the club as a director and ambassador.

Goal exclusively revealed that Moyes is on the verge of being announced as United's next manager and McQueen feels that while Mourinho may be the fans' preference, the 50-year-old Scot should be given the position.

"Mourinho will be the fans' choice but I'd go for David Moyes, simply because of his work ethic and the teams that he has built on a shoestring," said McQueen.

"The only drawback is that he has never won anything and that could count against him."

Despite offering his backing for Moyes' appointment, McQueen believes any manager tasked with following Sir Alex's reign at United is fighting an uphill battle.

"There are plenty of people at that club who don't know anything other than Sir Alex as manager - the under 30s have never heard of Ron Atkinson or anyone who preceded Ferguson's time at the club," he said.

"All the fans will be worried now who comes next after years of uninterrupted success - and there's no doubt that whoever comes in will struggle in comparison."
