Liverpool & Fulham at odds over €6.3 million down payment for Dempsey
The Cottagers accepted a €9 million bid from Aston Villa on Thursday night but the USA international has turned down a move to the Midlands outfit
EXCLUSIVEBy Wayne Veysey | UK Correspondent
Liverpool and Fulham are at odds over the cost of the down payment for Clint Dempsey as the two clubs remain locked in negotiations over a deal for the USA international, Goal.com understands.
It can be revealed that the London club accepted a bid from Aston Villa late on Thursday night for Dempsey that was €6.3 million (£5m) up front plus €2.5 (£2m) of add-ons.
Dempsey rejected a move to Villa Park as he continues to hold out for a last-ditch switch to Anfield.
Fulham have made it known during discussions on Friday they would accept a similar offer from the Merseysiders but Liverpool are reluctant to meet the asking price for the 29-year-old, who has little re-sale value.
Sources have told Goal.com that the west Londoners are playing hardball and refusing to lower their valuation even if it means that Dempsey is still a Fulham player after the transfer deadline.
The US international has antagonised the club with his behaviour since returning to pre-season and owner Mohamed Al-Fayed is refusing to grant him a simple passage out of Craven Cottage.
Dempsey has made it clear that his preference is to quit Craven Cottage for Liverpool, whose manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he has made enquiries about signing the player.
As revealed by Goal.com earlier this month, Dempsey has been training on his own after making it clear he does not want to play for the Londoners again while waiting for a move to Liverpool to materialise.
The American has been left in limbo while his future remains up in the air but he has been reluctant to consider alternative offers, with Sunderland and Everton also showing interest.
