Werder Bremen can sign good players despite poor league showing, insists Allofs

The club's sporting director believes that the good atmosphere around the Weserstadion means that Thomas Schaaf is still capable of bringing in talent

Werder Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs has stressed that his club are still capable of bringing in top players, despite their poor showing in the Bundesliga last season.

Thomas Schaaf's men finished a disappointing ninth place in 2011-12, but have been active in the transfer window, braining in the likes of Eljero Elia and Nils Petersen from Juventus and Bayern Munich respectively.

And Allofs believes that the arrival of some fresh faces will help his side force their way back into Europe in the upcoming campaign.

"The very fact that we're not playing internationally is no reason not come to us," he told Goal.com. "Ninety-nine per cent of players don't look at the table, but rather at what is happening in the club.

"Werder's goal is to get back to playing internationally. But you can speak of 12 or 13 clubs who want to get into the Champions League.

"While we are talking about goals for the coming season at this time, we are in the middle of preparations, and you can't draw sufficient conclusions from games against low-quality opponents.

"But the atmosphere in the training camp in Norderney was very good. The new players have integrated well. They could fit in."

Meanwhile, Tim Borowski, who left the club this summer, but has been groomed for a backroom role, feels that the team will be capable of finishing at the top end of the Bundesliga table.

"The club have brought in a lot of good new players. I can see Werder Bremen being a surprise team this season."

Werder Bremen get their Bundesliga campaign under way with a trip to back-to-back champions Borussia Dortmund on August 24.
