Schalke reach agreement with Barnetta
The 27-year-old was released by Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, but is now set to move to the Veltins Arena on a three-year deal
EXCLUSIVEBy Hassan Talib Haji & Sebastian Heier
Schalke are set to seal the transfer of free agent Tranquillo Barnetta, who was recently released by Bayer Leverkusen.
The Switzerland international endured an injury-plagued season, and the BayArena outfit elected not to extend his contract, which expired at the end of the campaign.
However, he has found a new club in the form of Schalke, who have qualified for next season's Champions League.
The Royal Blues saw off competition from Lazio to sign the 27-year-old on a three-year contract, and the transfer will be formally announced in the coming days when the Schalke board approves the deal, Goal.com can exclusively reveal.
Barnetta moved to Germany eight years ago from St Gallen, and it is believed that his affection for the Bundesliga was one of the major reasons he rejected the Serie A side's advances.
The winger, who also enjoyed a brief spell on loan at Hannover during his time with Leverkusen, has made 59 appearances for his country, scoring eight times.
