Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeneß is adamant that captain Mark van Bommel is still fully committed to the cause, and remains confident that the Dutchman will be playing for the club at the start of the new season.
Van Bommel is currently mulling over a one-year contract offer from the Bavarian giants, although he is reportedly unhappy with regard to the length of the new deal. Although he won't admit it, the 31-year-old also can't be too happy about reports that Bayern will step up their efforts to sign Ukrainian midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk from Zenit St Petersburg in the summer.
Hoeneß was distinctly unperturbed when commenting on the current cloud of uncertainty concerning the Oranje star, however.
"We've made Mark an offer. He'd obviously have liked a longer timeframe, but we don't regard that as possible at the moment," he told the club's official website.
"I personally believe that if he plays well for us, and he's doing really well at the moment, we can keep on extending his contract – for one, two, three, four or even five years. It can always be extended.
"Let's wait and see, but we're fairly relaxed. He knows very well what he has here at Bayern, and I think that'll make it very difficult for him to decide against Bayern, although he may be a little annoyed right now.
"But at the end of the day, I reckon he'll choose to stay with us."
