Bayern’s Dutch captain is currently mulling over a one-year contract offer from the Bavarian giants, although he is reportedly unhappy with regard to the length of the new deal.
The development has led to speculation that Bayern will step up their efforts to sign Ukrainian international Tymoschuk from Zenit St Petersburg in the summer.
Speaking from the club’s winter training headquarters in Dubai van Bommel revealed that he didn’t fear the arrival of the talented defensive midfielder.
“He can come if he likes, but he’ll have to sit on the bench,” the 31-year-old quipped.
A number of media reports claim that Bayern are lining up a €14 million bid for Tymoschuk who has already been at the club for preliminary negotiations.
Speaking about the contract offer on the table from Bayern the feisty midfielder said: “The club have given me until the end of January to decide and I intend to use that time.
“I am 31; I am fit and feel that I can hold my own still in the big games. I know a few players who play on until they are 38. I would love to extend my stay here, but not under any conditions.”
Van Bommel arrived at the Allianz Arena from Barcelona back in 2006 and became the first foreign player to captain the club in its illustrious history.
He was, however, sent off in only the second game of the season and manager Jürgen Klinsmann relegated him to the bench. Since then though he has regained his place in the side and has been one of the most consistent performers as Bayern turned around a poor start to the season to finish second at the half way stage.
