Bayern, returning to the Champions league after a season’s absence, have been drawn in a group alongside perennial French champions Lyon, Luca Toni’s former club Fiorentina and Steaua Bucharest.
Despite avoiding the top clubs from England and Spain, the Bavarians have been handed a far from easy task and will face a serous challenge to qualify to the knock-out stage.
“There are never easy groups in the Champions League” trainer Jürgen Klinsmann said.
“Fiorentina have got their attraction with Luca Toni, Lyon will be a tough nut to crack and Steaua have a very strong team. This group is tough, but we are looking forward to the games in the Champions League” he added.
Club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was also confident of being able to make it out of the group.
“It is a group that should not be underestimated. Lyon, Bucharest and Fiorentina are hard to play against and are big clubs in their own countries” he explained.
“It’s a gem for Luca Toni and lots of football fans in Germany and Italy to meet Fiorentina. I’m looking forward to all these games and am convinced that we will achieve our goal of qualifying from the group.”
Playmaker Franck Ribéry on the other hand was not so happy to have been pitted against French side Lyon.
“I would have rather have drawn another larger team such as Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal- but not Lyon.
“I know fully well from personal experience what a good team they are and how difficult they are to beat” he warned.
