The star attacker believes Uruguay deserved the victory over Argentina in the quarter-finals of the Copa America, expressing his elation at rewriting history

Uruguay are through to the semi-finals of the Copa America after settling a 1-1 draw with Argentina on penalty kicks by winning 5-4.

The victory over the hosts and favourites sets Oscar Tabarez's men up with an encounter against Peru for a spot in the final.

With the game played on July 16, the date brought back sweet memories for striker Luis Suarez. In 1950, Uruguay edged Brazil 2-1 in the final of the World Cup, upsetting the host nation in the Maracana Stadium.

"July 16 was a historic date, and we talked about it, and we also wanted to make history," Suarez stated after the match.

"It's an incredible moment. I believe we deserved it because in the first half 'the Russian' [Diego Perez] was sent off, and justice was served."

The Liverpool star attributed much of the credit to those in the stadium who travelled to Santa Fe to support Uruguay.

"We knew playing against the hosts was going to be difficult because we had all of the stadium against us, but we have to thank all of the fans and family who came to support us," Suarez said.

The semi-final showdown with Peru will be played on Tuesday night July 19 in La Plata.
