Trezeguet: River Plate must fight for the title

The Millonarios star believes his side must aim for the top, while revealing his pleasure at being able to contribute to the side

River Plate striker David Trezeguet says his team must fight for the Torneo Final championship, after they beat Belgrano 2-1 in their first fixture of the campaign.

Trezeguet made a goal in the hard-fought victory, with los Millonarios eventually overcoming their local rivals despite the sending off of Leonardo Ponzio just after the start of the second half.

"I have wanted to continue contributing," the 35-year-old told TyCSports. "Hopefully [I'll] keep getting minutes and playing.

"We must fight for the title [now]."

The former France international also spoke about the return of coach Ramon Diaz, who won five league titles, the Supercopa Sudamericana and the Copa Libertadores with the club between 1995 and 2003.

"The arrival of Ramon Diaz, the enthusiasm of the fans, because new players joined, because we could have a good pre-season [our goals have changed]," said the former Juventus star.

"He stopped speaking down [about what we could hope to achieve]... River is returning to what was its basic game.

"Mauro Diaz and Lanzini are improving significantly and will be very important."
