The 17-year-old midfielder got the call from coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena to practice with the senior Tigre team ahead of the upcoming 2012 Apertura campaign, which begins in August. Fernando, who plays in a more attacking midfield position than his illustrious father, has yet to feature in the first team but has appeared in a handful of reserve matches after impressing in the youth divisions.
Speaking to Ole on Tuesday as preparations for the new season kicked off in Victoria, Redondo Jr. affirmed that he was over the moon to be included in his coach's plans.
"El Vasco [Arruabarrena] called me last week and when he told me that I had to report for training, I could not believe it. It is the best thing that has ever happened to me," the youngster beamed.
"It has been my dream ever since I was a kid and I started playing football. It is what every kid wants when they kick their first ball."
Redondo, who cites Kaka of Real Madrid as well as Boca's Juan Roman Riquelme as his idols on the pitch, was adamant that he would not be trying to follow in his father's footsteps.
"My old man was an out of this world player. Besides, we play in different positions because I am a No. 10."
Something of Fernando Sr. remains, however; his commitment to keeping his flowing locks.
"I would not cut my hair if the coach asked me too," the teenager affirmed, while resigning himself to the fact that he probably would not survive the pre-season ritual reserved for new players.
"I've got no chance, [my team-mates] are going to shave my head."
