Game of the Week: Velez Sarsfield vs. River Plate, Sunday 20:20

An intriguing encounter between two of the form teams in the Apertura, who both find themselves at the top of the table. River start the round in first place with 10 points from a possible 12, while after last week’s setback against Boca Juniors, Velez are one point back.

Angel Cappa faces a mini-defensive crisis, with Adalberto Roman away with Paraguay and Jonathan Maidana not 100%. Maidana should play, but Ramiro Funes Mori has a chance of making his Millo debut. Up front Manuel Lanzini and Diego Buonanotte will contend the final place in the River attack alongside Ariel Ortega.

After competing in the Copa Sudamericana yesterday evening against Banfield, Velez are yet to carry out their squad evaluation looking towards the weekend. Barring injury a full-strength team can be expected from Ricardo Gareca.

Prediction: Velez Sarsfield 1-1 River Plate

FRIDAY

Godoy Cruz vs. Estudiantes

Godoy will face Estudiantes tonight without Uruguayan Jorge Curbelo, who was expelled against Colon last weekend. Francisco Dutari is preferred to youngster Nicolas Sanchez, as Omar Asad plumps for experience.

After the La Plata clasico was postponed last week Estudiantes arrive in Mendoza well-rested, and will line up in their familiar 5-4-1 set up. Gaston Fernandez makes the bench after returning from injury, and ‘La Gata’ could play midweek in the Recopa.

Prediction: Godoy Cruz 2-2 Estudiantes

Racing Club vs. Colon, 21:15

It is a must-win game for both clubs in El Cilindro after disappointing results the week previous. Racing coach Miguel Angel Russo has had his hand forced by suspensions and international call ups and makes five changes to the team; one plus is the return of captain Claudio Yacob.

Colon are also affected by suspensions after having two sent off at the weekend; Ivan Moreno y Fabianesi and Alfredo Ramirez enter for Cristian Ledesma and Mauro Bellone. World Cup defender Ariel Garce is also available after recovering from injury.

Prediction: Racing Club 2-0 Colon

SATURDAY

All Boys vs. Olimpo, 14:10

All Boys will have the luxury of returning to their own stadium, after the Floresta ground was repaired following damage caused by Velez fans. The rain has interfered with the Albo team preparations; the major doubt is whether Lucas Rimoldi will enter midfield in place of Juan Rodriguez.

Olimpo coach Omar de Felippe lines his team up identically to the week previous, when the Bahia Blanca outfit took Racing down 1-0.

Prediction: All Boys 1-1 Olimpo

Boca Juniors vs. San Lorenzo, 16:15

A clasico in every sense of the word and a game that promises to be explosive. Claudio Borghi is likely to stick with the same XI that beat Velez on Sunday; Clemente Rodriguez is one doubt with a muscle strain, but is expected to start tomorrow afternoon.

Ramon Diaz was dealt a blow this week when first choice goalkeeper Pablo Migliore was ruled out with Hepatitis, and will play Damian Albil between the posts. Aureliano Torres is also out on international duty, and will be replaced by Nelson Benitez in midfield.

Prediction: Boca Juniors 2-1 San Lorenzo

Arsenal de Sarandi vs. Argentinos Juniors, 18:20

High-flying Arsenal will look to continue their excellent early form against struggling champions Argentinos, who are yet to win a game. After an excellent win away to neighbours Independiente Gustavo Alfaro will attempt to field an unchanged team, although the fitness of Jorge Ortiz is being monitored.

Argentinos meanwhile are waiting on the availability of Nicolas Blandi and Miguel Torren, who both picked up knocks in the 0-0 draw against River on Sunday.

Prediction: Arsenal de Sarandi 1-0 Argentinos Juniors

Newell’s Old Boys vs. Independiente, 20:30

Independiente coach Dany Garnero faces a must-win game in the most inhospitable of settings, as his Rojo side travel to Rosario to face Roberto Sensini’s side. Sensini welcomes back ‘Nacho’ Fideleff to the team after a month and a half on the sidelines, with the defender entering for Estigarribia at the back.

Independiente make four changes after the home disaster last week against Arsenal. Goalkeeper Adrian Gabbarini is a big doubt for Garnero after suffering a hamstring strain; Hilario Navarro would replace the 24-year-old if ruled out.

Prediction: Newell's Old Boys 0-0 Independiente

SUNDAY

Quilmes vs. Huracan, 14:10

Quilmes will be desperate to bounce back after falling last week to Tigre 3-0, a result which leaves them with just two Apertura points. Hugo Tocalli will repeat the same 4-3-1-2 system as seen on Saturday, but with one change expected: Oscar Morales will return in midfield for Leandro Coronel.

Meanwhile Huracan coach Hector Rivoira intends to put out the same XI which managed a credible draw against Newell’s Old Boys a week ago. Rolando Zarate continues as lone striker in a 4-3-2-1 set-up.

Prediction: Quilmes 2-1 Huracan

Gimnasia L.P vs. Lanus, 16:15

Claudio Graf has impressed Gimnasia staff in training this week, and looks set to join the first XI as the Lobo search for their first win of the season. Graf will enter for Lorito Jimenez in attack, with Juan Neira dropping into midfield.

Unbeaten Lanus will be without suspended coach Luis Zubeldia in La Plata, but otherwise the Grana boast an almost full-strength squad to choose from. Zubeldia’s biggest decision concerns whether to include Silvio Romero in attack after the striker wowed in practices; El Chino could take Santiago Saucedo’s place partnering Mauro Regueiro up front.

Prediction: Gimnasia 1-1 Lanus

Banfield vs. Tigre, 19:30

After yesterday’s win over Velez in the Sudamericana Taladro chief Julio Falcioni could rest a pair of players for Sunday’s clash with Tigre, although more will become apparent after training and fitness evaluations today.

Tigre finally got off the mark in the Apertura last week after starting with three defeats; Ricardo Caruso Lombardi however looks set to change a winning team and as well as the personnel could change the formation to a 4-4-2 or 3-4-1-2 set up.

Prediction: Banfield 2-0 Tigre
