Newell's Old Boys Coach Roberto Sensini Devastated At Lost Apertura Opportunity

The Rosario outfit could have won the title with a win over San Lorenzo...

Newell's Old Boys coach Roberto Sensini was understandably devastated after they let the opportunity to pip Banfield to the Apertura title slip away on the last day of the season.

The Rosario based outfit had the chance to claim the title for the first time since 2004 with Banfield losing away to Boca Juniors but it wasn't to be as Los Leprosos were themselves felled by San Lorenzo 2-0 at home.

"We are sad and losing this way is bad, it hurts because we lost. We started poorly and made mistakes," he said afterwards at a press conference.

"I thank the squad for keeping us in it until the final game and the people for supporting us on what is a difficult day but this is football and we must be prepared."

Despite going so close the former Argentina international refused to blame his players for their failure to win their final home game, which would have made them champions.

"They are the same players who brought us this far. We could not beat San Lorenzo and that cost us the championship. Banfield did things better than us. The points say so and they are champions," he stated.
