Banfield regained their place at the top of the Apertura table with their win over struggling Huracán. Silva’s 14th goal of the season was all it took for Banfield to walk away with three points and put last week’s first defeat of the season behind them. Despite unveiling their new manager in the week Huracán fell to their 11th defeat of the season as things continue to go from bad to worse for the club second from bottom in the league.

Newell’s Old Boys failed to stay in top spot this weekend as they fell to a home defeat to midtable Arsenal. First half goals from Jara and Perez gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the interval in Rosario. Boghossian brought the hosts back into the contest with his 10th of the season shortly after the restart but as the game wore on Newell’s could not find the inspiration needed to take even a point from the game. Newell’s now trail Banfield by two points with two games to play at the top of the table while Arsenal’s points ease their relegation worries.

Vélez’s third win on the bounce keeps them in with a shout of wrestling the title away from the two teams above them going into the final couple of games of the season. A strike from Moralez gave them a 1-0 lead at half time but this was cancelled out in the second half by Diaz for River. The visitors had been showing uncharacteristic good form in recent weeks and went into the game also unbeaten their last three. Two goals in the last ten minutes from López and Zarate sealed the win for the home side who sit five points behind leaders Banfield with two games to go.

A win for Independiente keeps them just within sight of a place in next year’s Copa Libertadores while another defeat for Boca pours more misery on a very disappointing season so far. A goal from Silvera gave the visitors the lead at half time but Mouche’s equaliser just shy of the hour mark put Boca back on level terms. It was Independiente’s determination that won out however as Piatti sealed all three points for the visitors in the dying embers of the match.

Colón’s patchy form continued as they fell to defeat at relegation threatened Atlético Tucumán. Maybe having already secured their place in next season’s Copa Libertadores Colón could be guilty of taking their eye off the ball but the home side took full advantage to claim three valuable points in their fight for survival. It was two goals from Rodriguez, one from the penalty spot, which did the damage for the home side. Although Tucumán stay in the relegation spots they do still have plenty to play for in their last two games of the season.

Estudiantes finished their Apertura campaign with a whimper as they played out a 0-0 draw with Chacarita Juniors. The point sees the home side finished their season, having played two match ahead of schedule, on 31 points and unlikely to be any better than midtable by the time the clubs around them have played catch up. This will not worry Estudiantes too much however as they jet off for the Club World Cup as they have already secured their place in next season’s Copa Libertadores by winning the competition this year. Chacarita meanwhile have far from secured their place in the Argentine top flight for next season and remain bottom of the average points league.

Argentinos Juniors made it back-to-back league wins with a home victory over San Lorenzo at the weekend. It was the visitors who had more at stake coming into the game and they started with urgency. San Lorenzo’s good start was rewarded when they took the lead through Pintos in the 18th minute of the match. Argentinos struck back in the second half though with goals from Coria and Oberman. The home side held on for the win dispite Oberman being dismissed with 20 minutes left to play. The defeat saw San Lorenzo’s chances of making into next year’s Copa Libertadores dealt a blow.

In the basement battle between Godoy Cruz and Rosario Central the points were shared amid late drama in the match. The game remained goaless in the regulation 90 minutes but Braghieri gave the visitors the lead as the game entered second half injury time. Then in the fourth minute of time allowed for stoppages Valentini saw red for the visitors and Higuain tucked home the resulting penalty to give the hosts a share of the spoils. The result leaves Central in the drop zone but Godoy Cruz are not doing too much better as they skirt along just one place above them.

Before the match it looked as though this game would be the perfect opportunity for Gimnasia La Plata to pick something up in their battle against the drop as Lanús had already secured their Copa Libertadores spot for next season. The game panned out very differently from that scenerio however as a goal in each half gave Lanús their third win on the bounce. The damage was done for the home side by Blanco in the first half and Salcedo in the second. Gimnasia now have their work cut out in their last two games if they are to be playing top flight football next season.

Racing Club were the latest team to take advantage of the hapless Tigre who have long look set to finish the season in last place. A single strike from Grazzini with 20 minutes of the match remaining was all it took to earn Racing their third win in four games. The win lifts Racing out of the relegation place for the first time in what seems like an enternity while Tigre’s poor form will surely be back to haunt them next season.
