Gimnasia & Rosario Remain In Argentine Top-Flight After Play-Off Wins
Jul 13, 2009 12:53:59 AM
Both clubs will remain in the Argentine First Division next season after heroic results...
Gimnasia de La Plata and Rosario Central pulled off great results that allowed both teams to stay in the Argentine top-flight for at least another year.Despite a 3-0 defeat to Atletico Rafaela last week, Gimnasia remained focused on their task and claimed a dramatic 3-0 win with two goals in the final minute of the match, and with only nine men on the field.
Gimnasia's goals were all scored in the second half, by Diego Alonso (72') and Franco Niell (89' & 90').
Having dominated great part of the first half, Gimnasia translated their superiority into goals late in the second half.
Uruguayan striker Alonso put them ahead when he poked the ball in after a rebound in the area. Then in the last two minutes of the match, Niell scored two headers to earn Gimnasia a dramatic 3-0 victory.
The stunned crowd at the Juan Carlos Zerillo stadium celebrated the victory as if Gimnasia had won the national championship.
Meanwhile, Rosario Central came from behind to draw 1-1 with Belgrano de Cordoba and will also remain in the First Division next season. Central had won the first leg 1-0 in Cordoba.
Miguel Angel Russo's team were in for a stiff test at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium, and went behind to a Juan Maldonado strike in the 37th minute, but one minute later Emiliano Zelaya drew Central level.
Both Rosario Central and Gimnasia de La Plata will have to improve a great deal next season in order to be competitive.
