San Lorenzo striker Gonzalo Bergessio affirmed that his team are one of the main contenders for the championship, along with Boca Juniors, and that their victory over Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy demonstrated that they are more than capable of claiming the title.
"The entire team were out of form in an individual aspect, and our opponents moved closer towards us. But for some reason we are still first. We demonstrated that we will fight right until the end," Bergessio told radio La Red, in reference to San Lorenzo's hard fought 2-1 victory over Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy on Sunday.
Bergessio recalled that in the 2006 Apertura Championship "Boca lost the title with a five point advantage in the last two rounds" and this means that nothing is ever decided until the end. That season Ricardo La Volpe's side lost a play-off to Estudiantes de La Plata in dramatic fashion.
"We have difficult matches to play, there are derbies and teams who are doing well, but we have to maintain our level," claimed Bergessio in reference to the upcoming matches with Newell's Old Boys, Lanus, Huracan, Independiente and Argentinos Juniors.
The striker is hopeful that he will be taken into consideration by Argentina's new coach Diego Maradona, after having taken part in the World Cup qualifier with Chile, in what ended up being Alfio Basile's final game in charge.
"I know that Diego watches the local based players a lot, and hopefully the coach will take me into consideration. Meanwhile I will continue to give my best for San Lorenzo," he concluded.
