'Giving hope to millions of Brazilians' - Goal's World Player of the Week Neymar

World Player of the Week
AGE 21
2-0 Mexico
Brazil 4-2 Italy

As soon as Barcelona confirmed the capture of Neymar from Santos, people began to question the wisdom of spending €57 million on a 21-year-old without no experience of playing in Europe. However, after the opening week of the Confederations Cup, it now rather ludicrously appears as if the Blaugrana have got themselves a bargain.

Of course, whether the striker will successfully adopt to the Spanish game is open to debate. However, what is beyond dispute is the player's prodigious talent. After launching the Confederations Cup in style last weekend, with a sublime strike from the edge of the area, Neymar scored an equally spectacular volley in a 2-0 win over Mexico on Wednesday before embarrassing goalkeeping great Gianluigi Buffon with a fantastic free kick in a 4-2 defeat of Italy on Saturday night.

Neymar simply makes every game in which he features worth watching. You cannot take your eyes off him for a second; otherwise you run the rather considerable risk of missing something sensatational - a mistake made by those fans who left the Japan game early, with Neymar setting up Jo for the Selecao's second with an outrageous piece of skill that took him past two bamboozled defenders.

Neymar has been the star of what has been an outstanding tournament thus far and, for that reason, he is a worthy recipient of our World Player of the Week award, as Goal Brasil's Matheus Harb underlines.

"I think it's fair to say that we are finally seeing the much-awaited leading skills that we expected from such a special talent," he enthuses.

"The new Barcelona player seems to have stepped up in the right time, as his beautiful goals and individual skills have played a key role in the Selecao’s overdue improvement as a whole.

"With his current form, Neymar not only justifies his high transfer fee to Barca, but gives hope to millions of Brazilian fans who are dreaming of a World Cup win on home soil next year."

Congratulations to Neymar, Goal's 215th World Player of the Week winner!
