Brasileiro: Round 15 Results

Table/Fixtures

Santos 4-2 Cruzeiro

Santos recovered from their hugely disappointing defeat against Nautico with an emphatic 4-2 win over the ever-inconsistent Cruzeiro at the Vila Belmiro.

The Peixe took the lead midway through the first half as Felipe Anderson drove in a fierce 25-yard effort, which is quickly becoming his trademark, that Fabio could not stop from finding the top corner. The advantage dissipated in the 29th minute as former Santos striker Borges found the net after some poor marking from a free kick. But three minutes later the hosts regained control of the game as a good move down the left resulted in 16-year-old Victor Andrade tapping home his first-ever senior goal from Felipe Anderson's cross.

Santos held on until the break but the Raposa restored parity shortly into the second half as Ceara's free kick from wide on the left caught Aranha out and sailed over the goalkeeper and into the net. The Alvinegro were becoming sloppy on the ball but scored their third of the night on the hour mark as Durval diverted Victor Andrade's effort into the goal from close range. There was no looking back for Muricy Ramalho's side from then on, and in the 78th minute Bill completed the scoring with his first for the club, adding the final touch from inside the six-yard box after Bruno Peres had put it on a plate for him.

Santos move out of the relegation zone and up to 14th due to the win while, after a bright start to the season, Celso Roth's team now sit in eighth place.

Fluminense 2-1 Sao Paulo

Fluminense managed to get the better of Ney Franco's Sao Paulo side, triumphing 2-1 at the Sao Januario.

The game began at an uninspiringly slow pace with neither side offering a lot the attacking department. It was not until 18th minute that the first real effort on goal arrived but after cutting inside from Thiago Neves' long ball, the former Real Betis man missed the target from 25 yards. Ademilson failed to put Sao Paulo ahead moments later and his side were soon behind as Leandro Euzebio beat Rogerio Ceni to Thiago Neves' free kick and glanced the ball into the goal off his head. The hosts could not hold onto the advantage until half time and in the 44th minute three players sprung Fluzao's offside trap from Jadson's free kick but Cicero was the one to convert with a header.

It only took six second-half minutes for the Carioca outfit to regain their advantage as Fred netted his eighth goal of the season with a well-judged, looping, cross-goal header that Ceni had no chance of stopping. Jadson came close to equalising midway through the second period but his poked effort dribbled wide of the post with Diego Cavalieri scrambling across his goal just to be sure. Sao Paulo tried to find a leveller but their efforts proved in vain as Abel Braga's men took all the points.

The win ensures that Fluminense lose no ground in the title race and although Sao Paulo remain in sixth position, the Copa Libertadores qualification spots have moved further away.

Botafogo 1-2 Palmeiras

Palmeiras ended a run of three straight defeats with a 2-1 victory over Botafogo at the Engenhao.

Fogao were presented with a fine chance to notch the evening's first goal as Bruno misjudged a cross from the right and the ball fell to Elkeson at the back post. Fortunately for the 'keeper,he had enough cover from his defenders and Artur did just enough to close the angle for the forward, who pulled his shot wide. It proved to be a costly miss though, as in the 15th minute Palmeiras scored via a composed finish from towering Argentine striker Hernan Barcos. The Verdao continued to pose a threat on the counterattack, but Obina was unable to volley home a quick-fire double.

Bruno made two sublime saves to deny Elkeson in the first half but he was eventually bested in the 58th minute as Andrezinho evaded his marker to slot home from Lucas Lima's accurate delivery. The Sao Paulo side showed tremendous grit and determination and they regained the lead 17 minutes from time. Fernandinho did superbly to dribble past John Lennon and then played a square pass across the box for Barcos to add his second. Andrezinho was unlucky not to level the game in the closing stages but his shot rattled the base of the post and was then cleared away.

Oswaldo de Oliveira's team retain seventh position, but the coach will be worried by their ongoing inconsistency. Palmeiras, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, despite the three points, but Luiz Felipe Scolari will hope the result can provide a positive platform to boost performances from.

Corinthians 1-1 Atletico Goianiense

Corinthians only managed to earn a point at home to second-from-bottom Atletico Goianiense after a 1-1 draw at the Pacaembu.

The Timao had a host of chances throughout the first half, but profligacy in front of goal saw the reigning champions becoming increasingly frustrated throughout the night. Inside 15 minutes, Douglas had already had a free kick palmed away by Marcio, while Jorge Henrique missed the target with a free header. Eron came close to supplying the opening goal for the visitors but no-one was able to divert his cross-cum-shot into the goal. Romarinho then saw his speculative header loop over the bar from Chiaco's free kick shortly before the break.

Corinthians' inability to convert their chances saw them fall behind in the 56th minute. Marcos whipped in a free kick from deep on the left and Ricardo Bueno rose highest, beating Cassio to the ball and heading into an empty net. The Musketeers rallied, and two minutes later they found the back of the net through Jorge Henrique but the goal was ruled out for an alleged push in the back of the defender. Paulinho and Ralf both missed fantastic opportunities to tie the game but the former eventually did so in the 78th minute as he fired Romarinho's stray cross past Marcio. The hosts were unable to find a winner and so the teams shared the spoils.

The result benefits neither team as Tite's men remain 11th and Atletico stay in 19th position, four points adrift of safety.

Best of the Rest

Internacional extended their unbeaten run to five games following a 0-0 draw with Nautico, though Fernandao would no doubt have been hoping for more. Portuguesa and Bahia played out a fixture with the same scoreline, while the game between Ponte Preta and Gremio also ended goalless. Vasco da Gama sunk Sport Recife 2-0 courtesy of exquisite strikes from Juninho Pernambucano and Carlos Tenorio. Vagner Love scored twice as Flamengo defeated bottom club Figueirense 2-0 and Atletico Mineiro downed Coritiba 1-0.

Player of the Round

With the game goalless and seemingly destined for a draw, the quality of Vagner Love was enough to earn Dorival Junior his first win as coach of Flamengo. Both teams had been reduced to 10 men in the first half, and in the 63rd minute Vagner Love evaded his marker to nod Adryan's corner in at the near post. The former CSKA Moscow striker then bundled Joao Paulo off the ball in the final minutes as he tore through on goal and fired a cool finish past Wilson. The brace ended a run of eight games without a goal for the 28-year-old and could well provide a springboard for the Rubro-Negro to improve results.
