Brasileiro: Round 10 Results

Table/Fixtures

Gremio 3-1 Sport Recife

Gremio continued their climb up the table after coming from behind to defeat Sport Recife 3-1 at the Olimpico.

The Imortal Tricolor took control of the game from the early stages but a serious attempt did not materialise until the 19th minute. Elano came to just inches within scoring his first goal for the Porto Alegre club but his free kick rattled off the crossbar. However, Sport responded well and after Marquinhos Gabriel hit the woodwork and Gilberto failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity, the visitors took the lead. Seven minutes before the break Reinaldo flighted the ball in from the left and an unmarked Felipe Azevedo headed it across goal and into the top corner.

Gremio peppered Magrao's goal with shots early in the second half and in the 64th minute he was finally beaten as Kleber's stabbed effort was parried to the side, but Marcelo Moreno slid in to convert the equaliser. Leandro fired home after another Kleber rebound 10 minutes later and in the 80th minute the 19-year-old scored his second, tapping in after a fantastic passing move from left to right for Elano to put it on a plate for him.

The win sends Vanderlei Luxemburgo's team up to fourth position while Sport's inconsistency sees them fall to 12th place.

Atletico Mineiro 3-1 Internacional

Atletico Mineiro won their sixth game of their last seven by defeating Internacional 3-1 at the Independencia.

Dorival Junior travelled to Belo Horizonte with a shortage in striking talent and it showed as Galo proved the more dangerous side in the opposing final third by far, with Danilinho looking extremely lively. Despite some good football the hosts were struggling to create clear-cut chances but their task was made much easier as Andres D'Alessandro was booked for a needless, petulant tackle and then dismissed for his reaction to the decision with 38 minutes on the clock. Cuca's side soon moved ahead as Guilherme's curled effort hit the post but was diverted into the goal off the keeper's back from the resultant rebound in stoppage time.

Defender Leonardo Silva scored for the third consecutive game on the hour mark after a delightful first touch brought Danilinho's cross down, which he then volleyed emphatically into the roof of the net. However, the 10-man Colorado halved the deficit moments later as Fred found space between the centre-backs to head in from Fabricio's cross. The comeback never occurred, though, and in second-half injury time the Alvinegro secured the three points as Bernard slid the ball to Damian Escudero on the left of the box and the Argentine drilled an accurate finish into the far corner past Muriel.

Atletico's early season form continues and they remain two points clear at the top of the table while Inter fall to eighth position.

Flamengo 0-3 Corinthians

Flamengo were hugely disappointing once again as they were brushed aside 3-0 by Corinthians despite being at home in the Engenhao.

The Timao were proving threatening as they absorbed the Flamengo attack before countering with speed down the wings. Romarinho forced Paulo Victor into a decent save from one resultant break but it was a defensive lapse that saw the home side go behind after 28 minutes. Dario Bonitelli was caught napping on the ball in his own half and Douglas dispossessed him before driving at goal and slotting the ball home. Douglas was on hand to capitalise on another error before the break as Renato Abreu's loose backpass fell to the attacking midfielder, who rifled an effort into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Ten minutes after the break Danilo added Corinthians' third with a thunderous volley from the left corner of the box. Romarinho's lofted pass sat up nicely for the veteran who used all his experience and technique to guide the ball past the keeper with immense power. It could have got even worse for the Rubro-Negro but Paulo Victor guessed the right way on Emerson Sheik's penalty in the 73rd minute, though the scoreline remained humiliating enough.

The pressure grows on Joel Santana by the week after another abysmal display yet his team remain in 10th position. Corinthians' post-Copa Libertadores rise continues with the club vacating the relegation zone and now occupying 12th spot.

Fluminense 4-0 Bahia

Fluminense kept pace with Atletico Mineiro at the league's summit with a 4-0 win over Bahia at the Engenhao with star striker Fred writing history in the process.

Both teams were guilty of lacking in quality in the final third during the first half as opportunities to find the net were scarce. Helder saw his piledriver of a shot dart narrowly over the bar in the opening minutes but Bahia did not threaten again until a swift break late in the half. However, Kleberson was unable to supply the finishing touch to an excellent move. Shortly before, Bahia had almost scored an own goal after a cross from Jean but Marcelo Lomba reacted well to keep the ball out. Fluzao stepped up a gear early in the second half and within three minutes of the restart they were presented with a fantastic opportunity to move ahead when Lomba brought down Wellington Nem in the area and conceded a penalty, which Fred converted.

Falcao's men were unperturbed after going behind but they struggled to break down a resilient Tricolor Carioca but they doubled their lead with their next available chance. Fred looked up and picked out Thiago Neves at the back post and the attacking-midfielder buried the cross with a precise header. Fred then won and dispatched his second penalty of the evening 15 minutes from time, netting his 44th Brasileiro goal for Fluminense and making him the club's highest-ever scorer in the competition. Vander rattled the woodwork for Bahia in the closing stages but there was still time for Flu to add a fourth as highly-rated fullback Wallace picked out the bottom corner with a poked effort in the dying moments.

Abel Braga's men remain in third position but Bahia move down to second from bottom after failing to win for the fifth consecutive fixture.

Best of the Rest

Santos drew their seventh match of the season after their game with Botafogo ended 0-0 but Cruzeiro returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Portuguesa. Nautico defeated Ponte Preta 3-0 at home while Vasco da Gama secured a fantastic away win by defeating Sao Paulo 1-0 at the Morumbi. In a replay of the Copa do Brasil final, Coritiba failed to beat Palmeiras once again as the pair drew 1-1. Atletico Goianiense picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Figueirense, who have not triumphed since round 1, 3-2 with goalkeeper Marcio among the scorers.

Player of the Round

After being delayed in making his debut due to paperwork issues, Kieza finally proved worth the wait with a first-rate performance for Nautico against the in-form Ponte Preta. The former Cruzeiro man was top scorer in the Serie B last season whilst on loan at the Recife club and continued that form into his second stint. A poacher's effort in the 36th minute was followed by an assist for Souza's effort just after the hour mark. He completed an excellent display with a first-time finish in the dying moments to earn a vital win for the Timbu.
