Brasileiro: Round 2 Results

Table/Fixtures

Flamengo 3-3 Internacional

Flamengo threw away a two-goal lead to a second-string Internacional side as the pair drew 3-3 in a hugely entertaining fixture at the Engenhao.

The Colorado were without a host of key players, most notably Leandro Damiao, Oscar and Andres D'Alessandro, but started well and enjoyed the lion's share of possession. However, they were stunned when Airton slammed home from a Flamengo corner just nine minutes in. If that goal was considered against the run of play then Inter must have been really taken aback when Ronaldinho converted a penalty after Indio felled Ibson in the area just six minutes later. However, the visitors managed to pull one back before the break when Fabricio surged down the left flank before squaring the ball for Gilberto to slot into the far corner.

Inter remained on top of the match but within three minutes of the restart the deficit returned to two once more. Rodrigo Moledo was overzealous in his pursuit of the ball and failed to make contact as Vagner Love cut inside and lifted his effort into the net. Dorival Junior's side rallied and managed to restore parity with two fantastic strikes in quick succession. After Fabricio rifled a left-footed shot into the top corner in the 67th minute, Jesus Datolo found the bottom corner just three minutes later.

Neither team managed to find the winner but Joel Santana will be worried about his side's inability to hold a lead so far this year. Inter though, would have been pleased to have taken a point from a potentially tricky away tie.

Atletico Mineiro 1-0 Corinthians

Atletico Mineiro secured their second consecutive win of the season by defeating reigning champions Corinthians 1-0 at the Independencia.

Tite fielded a much stronger team than the one that lost to Fluminense in the opening week but they struggled to break down a resilient Galo defence. Alex created the best opportunity of the half with a great ball in from the left but Elton somehow failed to hit the target with his header. At the other end Mancini and Bernard both fired wide of Cassio's goal before Willian saw his low shot palmed away by Giovanni.

Timao continued to struggle to find a way past the hosts' stalwart defence and after Rafael Marques cleared Willian's goal-bound effort off the line, Atletico took the lead. A delightful ball over the top by Rever found Danilinho alone in the centre of the box and he nonchalantly looped a header over the keeper and in. Both sides finished the game with 10 men as Fabio Santos and Andre saw red in the closing stages.

The holders of the Brasileirao remain down the bottom of the table having failed to pick up a single point in their opening two games. Galo are one of just three sides to retain a 100 per cent record and currently occupy a Copa Libertadores spot in third position.

Coritiba 2-3 Botafogo

Botafogo came from behind to win for the second round in a row as they defeated Coritiba 3-2 at the Couto Pereira stadium.

The game was goalless for just 33 seconds as Everton Costa slipped the ball to Lincoln on his right and his shot deflected in at the near post to put Coritba ahead. The former Galatasaray midfielder almost added another with a beautiful rabona from out on the left but his side's good start soon came to an end. Having rattled the bar earlier in the game Lucas found space in the area to restore parity and Vitor Junior gave Fogao the lead with a point-blank finish from Marcio Azevedo's cross with 26 minutes played.

Coxa continued to pepper the Botafogo goal with shots and they got their rewards soon after half-time when Lucas Mendes nodded in from Demerson's flick on at a corner. The hosts then had plenty of chances to win the game but their wastefulness in front of goal cost them dearly when O Glorioso grabbed a winner in the 86th minute. Lucas initiated the move from wide on the left and then broke into the box where he tapped in from German Herrera's cutback.

Oswaldo de Oliveira's side have now picked up maximum points from their two fixtures and sit at the top of table while Coritiba find themselves at the other extreme having failed to earn a point this season.

Fluminense 2-2 Figueirense

Figueirense showed great resilience to earn a valuable 2-2 draw against a 10-man Fluminense at the Engenhao.

Abel Braga was unable to call on Fred, Deco and Wellington Nem but one of their replacements, 19-year-old Marcos Junior, broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Wallace's deflected attempt fell at the feet of the young striker who shot on the spin and found the far corner. On the stroke of half-time Wallace was dismissed for a second bookable offence and within 15 minutes of the restart the game was tied. Tulio did well to create space in the box and he passed the ball to Caio who hammered the ball past Diego Cavalieri from 12 yards out.

Despite their man disadvantage Fluzao remained competitive and they took command of the game once more just nine minutes later. A beautiful reverse pass from Marcos Junior put Wagner through on goal and the 27-year-old slotted the ball home. The hosts' attempts to hold onto their lead proved futile when Pablo's 20-yard effort squeezed past Cavalieri at the near post.

The Tricolor Paulista would have perhaps had this game marked down for three points beforehand but will no doubt have been satisfied to have shared the spoils on the night. The two clubs are fourth and fifth in the table with Argel Fucks' side closer to the top by virtue of having scored more goals.

Best of the Rest

Alecsandro's wonder strike was the only goal of the game as Vasco da Gama defeated Portuguesa. Sao Paulo scraped past Bahia 1-0 courtesy of a Luis Fabiano goal and Santos were held to a 0-0 draw with Sport Recife. Atletico Goianiense again gave away the lead as they drew 1-1 with Ponte Preta and Andre Lima was the only player on the scoresheet as Gremio earned their first win of the season against Palmeiras. Elsewhere, Nautico and Cruziero must continue to search for their maiden wins as they played out a goalless game in Recife.

Player of the Round

For the second week running the award goes to a Botafogo player, but this time around the recipient is Lucas. The wing-back was at his explosive best as the Rio de Janeiro side secured three points away from home with another strong performance. The 24-year-old caused problems all night as he provided much of the attacking impetus for his side. He scored two great goals that displayed his impeccable movement and was unlucky not to have completed the hat-trick as his long-range effort was tipped onto the bar.
