Santos 2-1 Avai

Santos did not have the easiest of nights at home to Avai, but finally managed to break down a determined Leao resistance and cement their place in the top four. Avai meanwhile drop down to 10th in the table, after Thursday’s reverse ensured a run of four games without a win.

The Peixe got off to an electric start, courtesy of prodigy Neymar. The 18-year-old striker drilled home a shot from the edge of the area with just 50 seconds on the clock, after fluid passing from the Santos team. For a while it looked as though a thrashing was on the cards, as Avai were content to just survive and the home team missed a flurry of decent chances.

The promised goalfest did not materialise however, as Santos took their foot off the gas approaching half-time and started to cruise through the match. With seven minutes to go though Neymar produced another piece of magic to put the game beyond doubt. The forward skipped past two defenders and fed Durval, who squared it perfectly for substitute Marcel to define from close range. A late consolation from Avai gave the slightest threat of a comeback, but two goals proved sufficient for Santos as they gained revenge for their earlier Copa Sudamericana exit.

Sao Paulo 2-1 Atletico GO

Sao Paulo picked up a vital win which moves them away from the dreaded relegation zone, while at the same time placing Atletico in deeper and deeper trouble as they languish second to bottom.

Dagoberto celebrates his vital winner

Sao Paulo started slowly, with the enforced absences of Ricardo Oliveira and Fernandao leaving them with precious little firepower up front despite a positive 4-3-3 formation. Atletico came to the Morumbi looking for a draw, and only threatened on the break. The Tricolor struck first through Xandao in the first half; the defender met Jean’s cross and powered a header past Marcio in the Atletico goal to put the home side one ahead.

The visitors opened up a little after the goal and were rewarded six minutes into the second period with Juninho’s equaliser. Sao Paulo pushed onwards desperate for the winner as the Morumbi became a pressure cooker, but struggled to open the game up and funnelled too much play down the middle of the pitch.

The arrival of Dagoberto however changed the face of the game, and the substitute struck the vital second 25 minutes into the half to secure victory. Sao Paulo next travel to fellow strugglers Atletico Mineiro, knowing that a win could put them in touching distance of the top four.

Fluminense 1-1 Palmeiras

Fluminense suffered frustration in the Maracana after dropping two points late on against Palmeiras, thanks to a 93rd minute strike from Ewerthon. Muricy Ramalho’s team stay first, but missed a chance to extend their lead over non-playing Corinthians.

Emerson put the home team ahead after 15 minutes as Flu dominated from the off. The striker put himself on the end of Dario Conca’s cross-shot and diverted past Marcos in the Verdao net to open the scoring, and for long spells of the game the Tricolor were worthy winners. Chilean Jorge Valdivia was overshadowed in midfield by a sparkling performance from Deco, who combined well with Argentine Conca and was a constant danger to the Verdao defence.

After almost 80 minutes in the lead though Flu were hit by a hammer blow. Substitute Ewerthon, who had entered for the disappointing Valdivia, took advantage of the space afforded by defender Leandro Euzebio’s expulsion to get on the end of Edinho’s header in the area, and the striker beat Fernando Henrique to equalise with almost the last kick of the game. Fluminense now face a tricky away clash with Guarani as they attempt to rediscover their winning ways on Sunday.

Player of the Week

Deco may be the headline stealer now in Fluminense, but the real heartbeat and creative spark of the team is Argentine playmaker Dario Conca - as he proved against Palmeiras with yet another assist.
