Brazil Coach Dunga: Juventus Are Ruining Felipe Melo & Diego
The Selecao manager claims the duo are being unjustly accused of being ‘culprits’ while they are in fact ‘victims’…
Brazil national team boss Carlos Dunga has leapt to the defence of Juventus pair Felipe Melo and Diego, who have come in for heavy criticism after the Bianconeri’s wretched start to the 2009-10 season.
Dunga believes the sticking point is that the Brazilian duo have yet to be given a chance to prove their worth because boss Ciro Ferrara is playing them out of position.
“If we can talk about somebody being at fault, then it’s not just the Brazilians: they are victims, not culprits,” Dunga told the Corriere dello Sport.
“When Melo came into the national team, he always did well and in all honesty it is hard to say from afar if he is going through a period of crisis or it is just a temporary phase that can be easily overcome.
“Felipe is being affected by the difficult patch that Juve are going through and, just like Diego, has an extra problem of having to adapt. After all, it’s never easy when you join a new team.
“They must be played in their true positions, though. And Melo needs someone close to him, as he had Riccardo Montolivo at Fiorentina, while Diego is a trequartista who must be helped by a striker in the phase of retrieving balls, just like it happened at Werder.
“But there is time to get back on track for them and for Juve and I’m sure they will do so after the holidays.”
