South American Debate: Pick Your Brazilian Strikers For South Africa 2010

Goal.com’s Tim Sturtridge puts you in Dunga’s shoes. You’re booking plane tickets for your 23 man squad to South Africa 2010. Three goalkeepers, check! Seven defenders, check! Seven midfielders, check! Kaka, check! Five places left, time to pack some firepower. But who? It’s up to you...

Dunga - Italy-Brazil Emirates Stadium (PA)
Robinho – At the tender age of 25-years-old Robson de Souza is already well on his way to bagging 100 caps for Brazil and while his 19 goals in internationals is hardly prolific he always carries a threat. A favourite of Dunga Robinho featured in 15 of Brazil’s qualifiers for South Africa as well as playing in every game of his nation’s 2009 Confederations Cup win. More often than not Dunga has deployed the Premier League’s record signing on the left-side of his attack.

Luis Fabiano – Now knocking on the door of 30-years-old Luís Fabiano Clemente has recently blossomed into a complete striking threat. Despite a disappointing showing against England in the recent friendly game the Sevilla hitman has already done enough to convince Dunga to take him to South Africa. Nine goals in qualifiers including an impressive brace away in Argentina made him Brazil’s leading marksman on the trail to the World Cup finals. His club form has also alerted interest from Europe’s elite clubs with AC Milan leading the pack.

Nilmar – After two good spells with Internacional in Brazil Nilmar Honorato da Silva is very highly rated in his homeland. On the international scene Villarreal’s summer signing bagged five goals in five World Cup qualifiers including a hat-trick against Chile. His goals against England and Oman in recent friendlies take his tally for Brazil to eight goals in nine senior internationals.

Hulk – Despite his tender age Givanildo Vieira de Souza is already a well travelled footballer and first shot to prominence in Japan. A switch to Porto and solid performances in the Champions League saw him make UEFA’s Top 10 Rising Stars list. Dunga got the chance to have a good look at Hulk when he called him up to the squad for November’s friendlies against England and Oman. After two cameo appearances from the bench it remains to be seen if the striker has done enough to go to South Africa.

Diego Tardelli – One of the most refreshing aspects of Dunga’s time in charge of the Brazilian national team has been his willingness to call up domestic based players. Diego Tardelli Martins’ goal scoring exploits for Atlético Mineiro made him impossible to ignore and he got his first call-up for Brazil’s friendly with Estonia. Further caps were won against Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile and if he can keep finding the net in Brazil then the 24-year-old could provide Dunga with that ‘surprise package’ in South Africa.

Adriano – For anyone who thought life as a top class footballer ends with an exit from the European scene should take a quick look at the top of the Brazilian league’s scoring chart. After sorting out his personal problems Adriano Leite Ribeiro’s goals have put Flamengo on the brink of the winning the Brazilian title and his resurgence has not gone unnoticed by Dunga. Recently Adriano featured in two World Cup qualifying matches against Argentina and scored his first international for two years with a strike against Venezuela.

Alexandre Pato – There is a feeling in Brazil that the face of Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva simply does not fit when it comes to Dunga’s plans for the national team. Despite establishing himself with AC Milan the 20-year-old has found his opportunities limited at senior international level. He was an active member of Brazil’s Olympic squad in 2008 but made just a single substitute appearances at the Confederations Cup the following year and featured in just three of Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers. What more the lad has to do to get a place in the World Cup squad is a mystery to all except Dunga.

Amauri – Despite Amauri Carvalho de Oliveira’s claims that he wishes to represent Italy at the World Cup it is not too late for Dunga to issue a plea to get him involved for Brazil. Dunga did call the player up for Brazil’s friendly with Italy earlier in the year only to see Amauri withdrawn by his club. His Italian passport means he can play for Italy but with no caps to his name the Juventus man still remains a possibility for Dunga. However with Amauri stating that he would rather “play for Italy than Brazil” is he worth the effort Dunga would have to put in to change his mind?

Ronaldinho – Even with Ronaldo de Assis Moreira’s form being patchy to say the least over the last couple of years Dunga appears to be a fan. He made the AC Milan player a mainstay of his Olympic squad for Beijing 2008 and also played him in eight of Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers. Although he was overlooked by Dunga for the recent friendlies against England and Oman Ronaldinho is still in the reckoning and a continuation of his current club form can only help his chances to play in his third World Cup.

Ronaldo – The column inches in Brazil are crying out for Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima to travel to South Africa. His form for Corinthians is steady and his goals have help his latest club secure a place in next year’s Copa Libertadores. Although the three time World Player of the Year has played down a return to the national team he has stated he would like to play in South Africa 2010. His 15 goals in World Cup finals make him the tournament’s record goal getter and there are plenty of football fans out there who would love to see him given an opportunity to increase his tally. As yet Dunga has not called Ronaldo up to a single squad and time is rapidly running out for the coach to change his mind.

So who gets your five places on the plane? Where’s Vagner Love, Julio Baptista, Kerrison, Neymar, Fred or your other favourite boy from Brazil? Who off the list will actually get on the pitch? Goal.com wants to know what YOU think...
