Ronaldo Helps Corinthians Win Copa Do Brasil
The Phenomenon played his part as the Timao obtained the trophy for the third time at the expense of Internacional...
The triumph means Corinthians secured direct qualification for the 2010 Copa Santander Libertadores, South America's biggest club competition.
On his return to Brazilian football, this was the second title won by Ronaldo, after having helped Corinthians win the Paulista State Championship earlier in the year. In that tournament Corinthians didn't lose a single game.
Corinthians brought a 2-0 advantage into the second leg at the Beira-Rio stadium, and they went into the break two goals to the good, with strikes from Jorge Henrique (19') and Andre Santos (28'). After the break Alecsandro scored twice (71' & 75') to level the score for Internacional, but both goals came far too late.
The match concluded with four sending offs. Inter's Argentine playmaker Andres D'Alessandro was given a straight red card, while Elias of Corinthians also received his marching orders. Both coaches, Tite of Inter and Mano Menezes of Corinthians, were also sent off.
Ronaldo, who wasn't at his best during the encounter, scored one of Corinthians' two goals in the first leg victory at the Pacaembu stadium. The Copa do Brasil was precisely the tournament where Ronaldo made his official Corinthians debut. This was against lowly Itumbiara in the opening phase.
"It is very emotional. We reached our main objective of the year. This group demonstrated fighting spirit, unity and, most of all, good tactical work. It is a team who attack and defend very well. It is a team who deserved the victory," claimed a delighted Ronaldo.
"We deserved the victory. Unfortunately they provoked us. They thought the match had already been decided. But this didn't take anything away from our brilliant victory."
The 2002 World Cup winner played a key role in Corinthians' title triumph. His best performance was in the round of 16 stage, when he scored two goals to lift his side over Atletico Paranaense.
Having won his second title of the year, Ronaldo will now he hoping to make the Brazilian Championship the third.
"We have everything to continue this path. I am fortunate to be part of a fantastic group that received me with open arms. My return to football has been fantastic. I would never have imagined such a thing," he concluded.
It was the third time Corinthians claimed the Copa do Brasil, after having already won the tournament in 1995 and 2002.
