Lehmann Blasts Balls
Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has joined the chorus of critics lambasting the balls that will be used at EURO 2008 this month…
Adidas have brought out the purpose-designed EUROPASS ball for the finals in Austria and Switzerland.
The new ball is supposed to have a unique new surface that creates more swerve through the air, allowing players to curl the ball with greater power.
The technology has the drawback – or upside, depending on one’s point of view – of making long-range shots especially difficult for keepers to judge, given the abundance of movement through the air.
Lehmann, who had enough trouble handling the more convential Nike T90 early last season, has criticised the choice of ball, insisting it will result in a multitude of cheap goals.
“We’ll see goals scored that wouldn’t have gone in with other balls,” said the former Arsenal keeper.
“You have to be very brave to go up for a catch. Punching will be a safer option.”
