Noel King lands Ireland caretaker role

The Under-21 boss has been placed in temporary charge of the senior team after Giovanni Trapattoni parted company with the Boys in Green earlier this month
Republic of Ireland Under-21 boss Noel King has been appointed caretaker manager of the senior squad following the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni.

King is likely to be in charge for the World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Kazakhstan next month while former international Ray Houghton and High Performance Director Ruud Dokter carry out a search of the market for suitable candidates for the role on a permanent basis.

Trapattoni stood down from his position "amicably" following September's losses to Austria and Sweden.

Harry McCue, King's assistant, has been placed in charge of the U-21 side on an interim basis and will manage the team in their qualification matches against Romania in October.
