Wales Manager John Toshack Announces Resignation With Immediate Effect
By Matt Monaghan
The 61-year-old's exit had been widely speculated after the nation started their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Montenegro on Friday night. Since taking over from Mark Hughes in November 2004, the ex-Real Madrid supremo has failed to reach a major tournament and the Football Association of Wales felt he had taken the team as far as he could.
Speaking at a press conference in Cardiff this afternoon, Toshack confirmed his original intention wasn't to throw in the towel.
"To be honest, I didn't decide to finish at the moment but I understood the situation," he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
"I mentioned to the president [Phil Pritchard] in the summer that after the first three games we would review the situation. Even after the disappointment in Montenegro, that was still the way I felt.
"I discussed things after the game for the last two-three days and each of us put our point of view across. We then came to the agreement it may be better for everyone concerned if achange was made now."
Manchester United star and former Wales captain Ryan Giggs had been made the early favourite to replace Toshack. Chris Coleman, Mark Bowen, John Hartson and Under-21s boss Brian Flynn have also been linked.
