Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas has insisted the world champions will not be looking for excuses after their comprehensive defeat in Buenos Aires to Argentina on Tuesday evening.

The Arsenal midfielder was part of La Roja’s midfield which saw the home side run riot in a dizzying opening spell, netting three times within 30 minutes of kick-off.

The match eventually finished 4-1, although Spain failed to convert a multitude of chances, striking the woodwork on three occasions.

Fabregas however praised the performance of the Albicelestes, saying: “Nobody likes to lose. We knew it would be a difficult game, and although there are excuses, we do not want them.

“You have to applaud them because they have attacked four times and scored four goals. It is true that we were not at our best, but neither have we deserved to lose 4-1. I think the result was too wide.”

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa seconded Fabregas’ sentiments regarding the final score, saying: “They were better from the beginning and we gave them chances, but I don’t know if the scoreline is justified. [Pepe] Reina has suffered from bad luck, and it sums up our night.”
