Mexico 1-2 Ecuador: Mexico-Based Duo Lead Ecuador To Victory

Jaime Ayovi and Christian Benitez scored goals for Ecuador in their victory over El Tricolor.

Mexico inaugurated Estadio Omnilife on Saturday but it was a pair of Mexico-based Ecuadorians who stole the show as Ecuador won 2-1.

Jaime Ayovi of Emelec and Santos' Christian Benitez scored goals for Ecuador as the South Americans won in Reinaldo Rueda's debut as Ecuador manager. Mexico's goal was also scored courtesy of Ecuador as a deflected pass went into the back of Ecuador's goal.

The loss was the first under interim manager Efrain Flores, who took over for fellow interim boss Enrique Meza after a 1-1 draw against Spain on Aug. 11.

First Half

Christian Benitez did not let the Mexican fans get too comfortable before drawing first blood. Benitez, a well-known figure in Mexico for his goal-scoring antics with Santos Laguna, knifed through the Mexican defense. After a poor pass from Carlos Salcido towards Andres Guardado, Ecuador's Luis Valencia knocked the ball forward and Benitez took control. Benitez got past Francisco Javier Rodriguez and Salcido before slipping a ball between Guillermo Ochoa's legs and into the back of the net.

A pair of former Chivas players nearly equalized within the next 10 minutes. First, Javier Hernandez had a look on goal from the left side of the penalty area but his header was off target. Then, Carlos Vela got free inside the box but ripped a 15-yard shot well wide of the goal.

Ochoa kept Ecuador within sights moments later when he parried a shot from Benitez away. Ecuador's Luis Checa missed a clear chance to put the visitors up by two when he sent a point-blank header wide of goal.

Ecuador maintained their pressure as Benitez tried to get the elusive second goal. In the 33rd and 34th minutes, respectively, he had shots on goal but Ochoa made a pair of strong saves to keep him from completing his brace.

Checa finally found the back of the net but it was his own goal. Hernandez dribbled the ball down the right side of the box and tried to get the ball across to the front of the goal. Checa stuck his leg out and deflected the ball past 'keeper Maximo Banguera and Mexico were on the scoreboard.

Second Half

Ecuador were not rattled by the own goal, though, and continued their pressure of Ochoa and Mexico's defense.

Ultimately, the visitors broke through. Again it was Valencia who got the plays started. Valencia sat on the right side of the box and sent the ball to the front of the six-yard box. Ayovi ran onto it and, with Ochoa charging off his line, got to the ball first. The ball deflected off Ochoa and went into the goal, just on the underside of the crossbar.

Mexico tried to counter but were unable to get the equalizer. Late in the game, Mexico pieced together a few flurries in front of the goal but Ecuador dodged the bullets.

Perhaps the closest Mexico came to scoring was in the 84th minute. On a corner kick, the ball fell to Enrique Esqueda in front of the goal but he was off balanced and was unable to poke the ball over the goal line.
