Basel midfielder Benjamin Huggel has announced that he will no longer play international football for Switzerland, retiring at the age of 33.

Speaking to the press on Friday, the former Eintracht Frankfurt player said: “I have to listen to my body.”

National team coach Ottmar Hitzfeld accepted the decision but admitted his disappointment at the outcome. “I would have liked to have the extensive class and experience of Huggel in the European Championship qualifiers,” the coach confessed. “He was in the last two years completely uncontroversial in our midfield.”

Huggel appeared 41 times for Switzerland since making his debut in 2003. Over that period he scored only two goals but enjoyed the European Championships of 2008 and the World Cup finals of 2010 with the national side.

He might have played the 2006 World Cup finals too, but he was banned for six matches after kicking a member of the Turkish technical team during the Swiss’ play-off victory.

Despite his international retirement, Huggel will continue his club career.
